2023 Peay Vineyards Estate Marsanne/Roussanne, West Sonoma Coast
At first sniff, aromas of elderberries, poached pear, wax, linen, cured lemon, and toasted almond emerge in succession. With a few minutes of air in the glass, the volume in the nose gets turned up and up! On the palate, the flavors are intense, really pronounced. There is incredible mid-palate depth though this is not a fat wine but focused and energetic. The aromas linger on the long finish and with such brisk acidity, the 2023 Roussanne/Marsanne is set to age as long as you desire.
This is by far the most complete Roussanne/Marsanne I have tasted from us in many vintages, if not ever. With plenty of time to ripen and moderate weather to keep elements of the wine in balance, the 2023 is an example of what Peay Roussanne/Marsanne can taste like if picked when Vanessa thinks it is ready and not when the season runs out or it is all rotting on the vine due to heavy late fog or rain.
I am saving 10 cases for our library to taste over the next decade or two as it is so delicious right now and I have a feeling this is one for my lifetime.

This is one of those once in a lifetime wines you look back on as a winery owner. People ask me what my favorite Peay wine is and I say it depends on the year and when I drink it. This has got to be one of my favorite Peay wines in a vintage that produced quite a few of them. Just a triumph.
