2022 Peay Vineyards Les Titans Estate Syrah, West Sonoma Coast
Akin in style to Cornas but our Syrah always has a lot more acidity, freshness, and lower alcohol than found in wines from that singular region of France. The 2022 Les Titans is true to form with aromas of BBQ, steak, and game framing a blackberry and lamb shank jus core of flavor. Whiffs of lavender keep the wine lifted, making me think of a Côte Rôtie Syrah with fewer stem flavors.
The Les Titans blend often features the darker, meatier side of Peay Syrah, something akin in style to Cornas but our Syrah always has a lot more acidity, freshness, and lower alcohol than found in wines from that singular region of France. The 2022 Les Titans is true to form with aromas of BBQ, steak, and game framing a blackberry and lamb shank jus core of flavor. Whiffs of lavender keep the wine lifted, making me think of a Côte Rôtie Syrah with fewer stem flavors (though we include about 10% whole cluster). This wine came after tasting six wines and I kept writing “yum” in my tasting notes. Yes, not very descriptive or helpful but directional? I obviously like the 2022 Les Titans. The 2022 vintage made wines that are very impressive for their solid core and this bodes well for enjoying them for their power now but also allowing you to watch them develop over the years. Do note, we bottled 50 cases in half bottles to accelerate the aging process and to increase the opportunities for opening a bottle of Peay when you just want a glass or two.
